Empowering Communities Through Literacy

Books Overseas

About Us

Who We Are

Books Overseas was founded by us, Federico Sammataro, Marcos Gomes, and Alex Martin, high school students from the School for Advanced Studies. Inspired by our love for reading and a desire to promote literacy, we’ve worked to rebuild libraries in the Caribbean and provide communities with access to books and knowledge.

Our Mission

Our mission is to empower communities by promoting literacy and access to educational resources. Through book donations and outreach, we aim to inspire learning and foster brighter futures across the globe.

Donations to the Sir Charles Hayward Library

Our Contributions

The Sir Charles Hayward Library in Grand Bahama is a cornerstone of education and community learning. We originally donated 1,200 books in our first batch and have now surpassed 3,000 books with a second donation of 1,870, thanks to Cheryl Black and Sunbelt Rentals.

Donations to the Saint James Parish Library and Hannover Library (Jamaica)

Our Contributions

In April 2024, we donated over 1,200 books to the Saint James Parish Library and Hanover Library in Montego Bay, Jamaica. These libraries, facing significant depletion, were able to restock their shelves with our contributions. The donation also supported the expansion of their tutoring programs and creative writing competitions, fostering education and creativity in the community.

Donations to the Maimon (Dominican Republic)

Our Contributions

In the September 2024 inauguration of a new library/reading room in Maimón, which now serves as a vital resource for English language learning while providing over 2,000 books to local schools and community centers

Press & Acknowledgements

"School for Advanced Studies (SAS) for a long time has fostered a culture that promotes our students reaching out to help others in our community and around the world. At School for Advanced Studies, we feel that students who create service projects that are impactful in making our world a better place are equally important to excellence in academics. Few projects are more important in that regard than fostering increased literacy and that is especially meaningful among populations in areas of the world impacted by natural disasters. SAS Wolfson juniors Alex Martin, Marcos Gomes, and Federico Sammataro are to be commended for their initiative “Books Overseas” which is designed to address that need. We are very proud of these three young men”
